The term “biometrics” refers to the identification of a person using physical or behavioral characteristics, such as a fingerprint or signature.
The Central Bank of Nigeria created a centralized biometric identification system called Bank Verification Number in cooperation with all Nigerian banks to address current identity management difficulties (BVN).
As a result, all clients with bank accounts in and outside of Nigeria (BVN Overseas Location) must register for their BVN.BVN is a Central Bank of Nigeria initiative that provides you with a unique number that can be verified throughout the Nigerian banking industry. Even if you have accounts with multiple banks, you only need one.
What is BVN?
BVN simply means bank verification number and the goal of the Bank Verification Number (BVN) is to uniquely verify the identity of each Bank’s customer for ‘know your customer’(KYC) purposes.
How to enroll and get your BVN?
A BVN is generated once a customer’s fingerprints and facial image are captured during the enrollment process.
A customer enrolls at any bank location where he or she already has an account or plans to open one.
Everyone who has a bank account is required to have a BVN. Getting a BVN can take up to 24 hours after enrollment. The bank will notify you of your BVN once it is generated. SMS alerts would be sent to all clients.
After ten years, the BVN expires. The customer returns to their bank to re-enroll ten years after the BVN was issued.
